Reclaimed wooden floor relaid in Groningen
A wooden floor with plenty of life left in it did not have to go to waste. Farwood carefully adapted the floorboards from the client’s previous home so they could be relaid in her new property.

The client’s request
Taking a quality wooden floor to a new home
The wooden floor in the previous home was still in good condition. The client therefore did not want to dispose of the material, but take it with her and reuse it in her new home. The task was to retain as many of the existing floorboards as possible and fit them carefully within a different space.
The challenge
Adapting boards of different sizes
An existing floor does not automatically fit a new space. For this project, the available boards also varied in length and width. As a result, the floor could not be laid according to one simple repeating pattern. The installation required precise measuring, careful distribution and many adjustments to individual floorboards.
How we made the floor fit the new space
The existing floorboards were adapted step by step to the dimensions and layout of the new space.

The different lengths and widths were reviewed before the boards were worked into the new layout.

The available space and junctions were carefully measured to determine how the boards should be distributed.

Adapting and cutting boards to size
Where necessary, individual floorboards were adapted and cut so they fitted both one another and the space.

The adapted floorboards were carefully brought together to form a coherent floor that fitted the room.

The work-in-progress photographs show how much measuring and fitting was needed to reuse floorboards of different sizes.
The final result: existing timber in a new home
The available timber could be reused and now forms a floor fitted to the new home. The differences between the floorboards were carefully incorporated into the layout, creating a coherent result with plenty of character. This kept a good-quality floor in use instead of discarding it.
Why this project required genuine custom work
Reuse instead of replacement
The timber was still usable and was therefore given a new purpose rather than being discarded.
No standard board sizes
The differences in length and width made a fixed, repeatable laying method impossible.
Precise fitting work
By carefully measuring, adapting and cutting, the existing boards could be brought together as one floor.

Can an existing wooden floor be reused?
That depends on the condition of the timber, any damage caused during removal and the dimensions of the new space. Floorboards that remain in good condition can often be measured again, adapted and relaid.
Why does a used wooden floor require more fitting work?
The boards were originally used in a different space. Their lengths, widths and junctions may therefore differ from what the new home requires. Each row may need fresh measuring and cutting.
Can boards of different lengths and widths be relaid?
